A brand asked me this question recently. They had a functional underwear product with stable sales, and they were not looking for a factory because the current one had failed. They wanted a second source before growth made capacity a problem. The concern was straightforward: “What if the new factory makes something that looks the same, but performs differently once customers wear it?”
That is the right concern.
I am a factory owner, so I will not pretend I am neutral about factories. But after 11 years in this business, I have seen plenty of products that passed an introduction call, showed the right certificates, and arrived in a neat first sample—then fell short when real production was compared with the product that built the brand’s reputation.
This is not only a period-underwear issue. It applies to period underwear, sport period shorts, incontinence underwear, period swimwear, and any intimate apparel where fabric behavior and internal construction matter. A factory can reproduce the silhouette and miss the product.
A new factory earns more of your business by matching your current product in a real, side-by-side trial—not by presenting the strongest capability deck.
Most buyers begin with the normal checks: company profile, audit documents, certificates, photos of the workshop, sample-room call, pricing discussion. You should do all of that. It can rule out obvious problems. It cannot prove that a factory can reproduce the part of your product customers actually notice after wearing and washing it.
A certificate may tell you something about a material, quality system, or factory process. It does not prove that a finished gusset sits in the same place, absorbs the same way, feels the same, or stays stable after washing. Those are product-specific questions.
An introduction call shows you what the factory wants to show. The real question is whether its team can translate your reference product into a controlled production specification, source the right materials consistently, and maintain it beyond the sample table. A slightly narrower gusset, a different seam method, or a stiffer fabric may look minor in a photo. Together, they can change fit, comfort, performance, and the review pattern your brand worked hard to build.
The way to close that gap is not a bigger promise from the factory. It is a smaller, controlled order that produces something you can test against your current production.

I am not talking about one more development sample. A sample is useful, but it may be made by the strongest technician with more attention than a production line has. The question is whether the factory can hold the result across a small batch.
Place an independent trial order with the prospective supplier while your main supplier continues its normal order rhythm. The key comparison points are absorbency, fabric hand and thickness, critical construction, and wash-change behavior, because these are the areas most likely to look similar while behaving differently.
You do not need a 20-page checklist for the first decision. Start with the places where a product can quietly drift away from the version your customers trust.

I would not publish a fixed durability promise without documented testing, but an internal matched wash check is enough to find divergence before customers do.
A dual-source validation plan protects continuity by keeping existing orders on their normal schedule while the new factory proves itself through a separate, limited batch.
Run the sequence with discipline.
Freeze the current reference. Define the product to match: a current production unit, bill of materials where available, construction photos, measurement points, and known customer feedback. “Like this one” is not a specification.
Give the new factory a clear trial brief. State what is non-negotiable, what may be improved, and what evidence is required before batch approval. Otherwise, silence can be treated as permission to substitute.
Keep the core order with your current supplier. The trial is not a replacement order; customer-facing production continues.
Review in parallel. Use the same inspection, functional, wash, and fit-feedback process for both products. Record the result. Memory is not a quality system.
Move volume gradually if evidence holds. Allocate a limited share of a future order, watch the next batch, and expand only after product consistency, communication, and delivery performance prove reliable.
This is slower than reacting to a crisis, but faster than recovering from one.

If a supplier cannot answer these questions clearly, do not assume a lower price makes the risk manageable. It usually means you will be the one discovering the boundary later, with customer inventory in the warehouse.
The best supplier relationship begins with evidence: a factory gets a fair chance to prove production capability, and the brand protects the product standards that created its existing demand.
