I get asked about this almost every week, and half the time the person asking doesn't actually know which problem they're trying to solve.

Why I'm writing this

A few months ago a buyer from a mid-size US activewear brand called me wanting to "add a period underwear SKU" to their running line. Her plan was to take an existing period brief pattern — cut for everyday wear — and simply tell customers to "wear it under our shorts for running." No structural changes, no gusset adjustment, no movement testing. She was treating a lifestyle brief as sportswear just because a customer could technically wear it during a run.

That's not really her fault. Most people have never had to think about the difference between "underwear you can move in" and "underwear engineered to be moved in." I've run a factory floor in Shenzhen for 11 years, and RFQs that start with "can we just relabel a period brief as activewear" land in my inbox more often than you'd guess. So let's break down what actually changes structurally — that's where the real answer lives, not in marketing copy.

How the layering method actually works

Wearing a standalone period brief underneath running shorts means stacking two independent garments, each with its own waistband, each cut for a different job. The brief was designed to sit against skin all day under regular clothing — not to move with you through a stride cycle or a squat. Here's what typically happens, based on both the construction logic and what runners describe in real-world discussion threads:

  • Two waistbands compete for the same real estate. One sits looser (the shorts), one sits tighter (the brief), and they don't always align, which is part of why people report visible waistband lines or a shorts waistband that slides down over a tighter brief underneath.

  • Heat and bulk stack up. Two layers of fabric across the crotch and inner thigh trap more heat than a single engineered layer — this is a basic textile fact, not a lab claim.

  • The gusset isn't anchored to the outer layer, so as your legs move through a running or squatting motion, the brief can rotate or shift independently of the shorts, which is exactly the kind of movement that leads to the gusset drifting off-center.

  • Inner-thigh friction increases because you now have two fabric edges (brief leg opening + shorts leg opening) instead of one, which is a common chafing complaint in runner forums discussing period underwear during workouts (Reddit r/XXRunning).

  • VPL (visible panty line) becomes more likely, since the brief's own leg elastic and gusset thickness show through a single outer layer that wasn't designed to conceal it.

  • Changing mid-activity means taking off two garments, not one — which matters a lot if you're at a race, a gym, or a school sports field with limited changing facilities.

None of this makes layering "bad." It's a workaround, not a designed system — it was never engineered as one unit.

How a 2-in-1 built-in gusset actually works

A 2-in-1 sport period short — which is what LY4291-1 is — starts from a different design brief entirely: the outer shorts and the absorbent gusset are patterned and constructed as one garment from day one, not assembled by the end user. Structurally, that means:

  • One waistband, cut and graded for the outer shell, with no second elastic band competing underneath it.

  • The gusset is fixed to the shorts' inner panel, so when your leg moves through a stride, a squat, or a jumping jack, the gusset moves with the shorts rather than sliding independently against your skin.

  • A single outer layer made from an 88% nylon / 12% spandex blend handles both stretch and shape retention, instead of two separate fabrics stacking heat.

  • One leg opening, which removes one of the two friction edges you get from layering two garments.

  • Because the gusset is integrated rather than an added-on brief, the silhouette reads as a normal pair of running shorts from the outside — that's a structural/design outcome of the construction, not a tested claim about invisibility in every fabric color or lighting condition.

I want to be direct here: this describes how the construction is engineered to behave, not a verified performance guarantee. We haven't published dynamic movement data — no running, squat, or jumping-jack leakage testing has been completed and documented yet for LY4291-1. This is our current development specification, and I'd rather say that plainly than dress it up with words like "proven" I can't back up yet. Any brand evaluating this construction should confirm real-world performance through its own approved sample and wear trials in its target market.

When a regular period brief under shorts still makes sense

The 2-in-1 format isn't the answer for everyone. For light activity — walking, a slow gym warm-up, errands, low-intensity yoga — a standalone period brief under any loose shorts you already own is genuinely fine; you don't need a dedicated sport-specific garment for movement that isn't demanding much from a gusset. It's also the more flexible choice if you'd rather mix and match your existing wardrobe, or if you want a higher-absorbency brief for heavier flow days that needs more coverage area than a compact sport gusset provides.

When a 2-in-1 structure is the better fit

Where the built-in structure earns its keep is sustained, repetitive, higher-impact movement — running, gym training, HIIT-style circuits, team training sessions — where a separate brief's independent movement against an outer short becomes a repeated irritation rather than a one-off inconvenience. That's squarely the running/gym/training use case we designed LY4291-1 around.

One thing I'll flag clearly: we have not done cycling-specific testing. Cycling puts sustained, concentrated pressure on the saddle contact area in a way running and gym training don't, and a running-oriented gusset pattern isn't automatically right for that pressure profile. A cycling-specific period short needs its own pattern development and its own wear testing — I wouldn't tell a buyer "this works for cycling" just because it works for running, and neither should anyone else selling into this category without saddle-specific trials.

This isn't a new problem, by the way — Federation University's 2025 research on adolescent athletes found that 91.5% of girls worried about leaking or staining sportswear, 62.8% had skipped a training session because of their period, and 33.3% had missed a competition entirely (Federation University). That's not a niche complaint — that's a participation problem, and it's exactly why brands like WUKA, Modibodi, Knix, and Saalt have already built products around integrated gussets rather than telling customers to layer (WUKA, Modibodi, Knix, Saalt). Multiple market studies also project continued growth in reusable period underwear, although estimates vary quite a bit depending on market definition and methodology, so I'd treat any single growth number with some caution (Grand View Research).

Now, if you're a brand: the 8 things you actually need to verify before you launch this category

Consumers ask "will it leak." Brand buyers need to ask harder questions, because you're the one who inherits the return, the bad review, and the reorder decision. Here's what I tell every buyer who calls me about developing a product like this, whether they end up working with us or not:

  1. Absorbency test method — what liquid, what injection rate, what's the defined saturation endpoint? A number without a method behind it is just a marketing figure.

  2. Dynamic movement data — has the gusset been evaluated during running, squatting, and jumping motion, not just static absorbency on a flat sample?

  3. Finished-garment PFAS/total fluorine testing — was the actual sewn garment tested, or only a raw-material declaration from a fabric supplier? Those aren't the same thing, especially with New York State's PFAS-in-apparel restrictions now in effect (NY State DEC).

  4. Certificate scope — if a supplier cites OEKO-TEX or similar, ask exactly which product line, materials, and certificate number it covers. A certification for one category doesn't automatically extend to a different garment built from different components.

  5. Gusset coverage dimensions — how far forward/backward does the absorbent panel extend, and does that scale across the size range or stay fixed?

  6. Grading logic across sizes — for a range like XXS–3XL, how are waist-to-hip ratio and thigh circumference handled at the extremes, not just the middle?

  7. Fabric-level testing — shrinkage, colorfastness, pilling, elastic recovery, seam strength: the boring tests that actually prevent returns.

  8. MOQ and development timeline by customization tier — standard colorway vs. logo change vs. full custom development carry different minimums and sampling timelines; map that out before committing to a launch date.

If a supplier can't answer most of these with specifics, that itself is useful information.

Where LY4291-1 stands today — stated plainly

Here's what LY4291-1 actually is, without inflating it:

  • Construction: a relaxed-fit sport short with a fixed, built-in leakproof gusset — not a two-piece layering system.

  • Outer fabric: 88% nylon / 12% spandex.

  • Size range: XXS–3XL.

  • Design details: drawstring waistband, dual side pockets, reflective detailing.

  • Absorbency: 30ml is our internal development target capacity, not a third-party laboratory-certified maximum absorption figure. How that translates to real use depends entirely on an individual's flow and training intensity — I can't responsibly give a "wear time" number, because it isn't a fixed constant.

  • Customization: open to OEM/ODM development — colorways, logo placement, packaging, size-range adjustments.

On chemical safety: as a company, we test PFAS-free status at the finished-garment level via SGS testing against EPA Method 533, on every batch since Q2 2024 across our production — that's a company-wide policy, and it's real. But I want to be specific rather than let that blur into something it isn't: LY4291-1 as a standalone new style still needs its own finished-garment chemical test on file, separate from our general production cadence, before I'd call it fully documented for this product. Similarly, our OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certificate (26.HCN.12213, Hohenstein, valid through July 31, 2027) applies to our period underwear line — I won't tell you it automatically covers this new sport short until we've confirmed the certificate's scope extends to it.

What we haven't completed yet, and I'd rather say so directly than have a buyer find out later: dynamic movement leak testing, sweat-plus-menstrual-fluid combined absorbency testing, post-wash performance data at 5 and 20 wash cycles, and wear trials across a representative range of body types and sport types. This is our current development specification. Final performance claims should be confirmed through your own approved sample and testing in your target market — that's not a disclaimer I'm required to add, it's just how I'd want a supplier to talk to me if I were the buyer.
